Saturday Morning Film Festival

Founded in the early 1970's Media Educators Association is the parent organization of THE SATURDAY MORNING FILM FESTIVAL and, more recently, co-producer of the Sirius XM satellite radio show LET'S CONSIDER THE SOURCE (see below).

For over 37 years MEA - the original screening discussion group in New York City - has been a not-for-profit organization established to foster a better understanding of the power of films and media in society today.

Our 150+ members are comprised of teachers, educators and their guests who work in the New York City and surrounding areas school systems. Each Saturday morning during the school year we meet to screen noteworthy Hollywood, independent and and foreign films for discussion. From an educational standpoint this is increasingly important because of the overwhelming impact that films, DVDs, videocassettes and interactive media have on our children.

Whenever possible the actors, producers and writers attend and participate in personal discussions with the audience. During our twenty years virtually every film industry notable has been our guest, including Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Ellen Burstyn, Marcello Mastroianni, Robert Altman and John Sayles - to name just a few. However if a guest is not available our members still hold a discussion of the film each week, a chance to voice their views and opinions with fellow film fans. Each discussion is a lively session where the real "stars" are the members themselves.

That knowledge is brought back to the classroom where 150+ teachers teaching an average of five classes a day reach tens of thousands of New York City prime movie-going students. And each teacher often discusses SMFF's films with an average of 50 or more fellow teachers in the faculty lunchroom, - other teachers who regularly attend films and/or are eager to assign films to their students and use films and videotapes as part of their curriculum.
